Things only seem to be getting worse for Manchester United, and what a fitting way for the disgraced Portuguese manager to finally be booted out of Old Trafford at the hands of old rival Rafael Benitez?

Newcastle were up 2-0 against Man United by half-time with many thinking that this was it for the coach – until the Red Devils emerged from the dressing room, scoring through Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez to earn the 'Special One' a bit of respite. At least for the time being.

Manchester City only had to win on home turf against relegation-threatened Queens Park Rangers to secure the Premier League title over fierce city rivals Manchester United based on goal difference, but the Sky Blues capitulated early in the second half.

QPR lead 2-1 in the 66th minute, and with Man United winning their own game against Sunderland, City would have to concede the title.

But Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero managed to net in the dying minutes of stoppage time to produce a result that no Hollywood screenwriter would ever have been able to fabricate, clinching the title from right under the noses of Sir Alex Ferguson and co – who, by the full-time whistle of their own game, thought that they had won the title.

The Cherries battled back from 2-0 down at half-time and 3-1 behind with 15 minutes to go against the visiting Merseysiders, with Nathan Ake's 93rd-minute winner sealing an inconic win.

It was the beginning of the end for goalkeeper Loris Karius who conceded four goals despite his team leading 2-0 heading into the break, and Bournemouth ended Jurgen Klopp's 12-game unbeaten run.

Romelu Lukaku spoiled Sir Alex Ferguson's party when he scored a hat-trick against Manchester United during the Scot's last game in charge of the side, though the Red Devils had already sealed the league title.

The champions went 3-0 up through Shinji Kagawa, Jonas Olsson's own goal and Alexander Buttner's fine finish, but the Baggies' James Morrison reduced the deficit – and substitute Lukaku made it 3-2, before Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez put United 5-2 ahead.

Lukaku's late double and Youssouf Mulumbu, however, denied Ferguson a winning send-off.
