The German international was sent off for a rash tackle in the 27th minute and Dortmund went on to lose 3-1 in the Bundesliga clash on Saturday. After the defeat, manager Sahin and team-mate Julian Brandt did not hold back in their criticism of the midfielder, with the former saying Can's dismissal was a "game changer".

Sahin told : "He must never go there like that. He knows that too. That was a game changer. The boys are on their last legs."

Brandt added: "With a full team, we could have brought the energy into the game. The early red card didn't help us. He knows himself that he has to be a bit more careful. He is very annoyed about his actions. But that's not why we conceded the three goals."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The defeat leaves Dortmund 10 points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich after just 10 games. The result was also the German giants' fourth away defeat in the league in a row. Pressure will be mounting on manager Sahin, too.
